I just released the first issue of Pattern Scrutiny — a gameplay design magazine focused on breaking down how core mechanics actually work in real games.
I’ve noticed that gameplay design patterns are often talked about in a way that feels either too abstract or too academic. That’s useful in theory, but when you’re actually building something, you need clarity — not just definitions.
That’s what this project is meant to solve.
Each issue focuses on a small set of patterns and explores them through comparison:
- an Anchor Pattern (the core idea)
- a Similar Pattern (something closely related)
- a Contrasting Pattern (something that pushes in a different direction)
The goal isn’t just to explain patterns — it’s to show how they influence real design decisions.
This first issue explores:
- Risk vs Reward
- Push Your Luck
- Guaranteed Progression
This is also the first official publication released under OutBox Games — and the first one that’s already been picked up by a customer, which is a pretty big milestone for me.
